Entryway Hybrid – Standard doors with custom jambs, transom and trim
Challenge: The French-style entry doors, which were original to this circa 1890’s house, were leaking badly after nearly 130 years of continuous use. The owners had been told by at least one other contractor that the unusually deep jamb and period brickmould details, which were also failing, couldn’t be replicated.
Solution: Because the doors are exposed to harsh conditions, we created a new entry system from very durable materials, incorporating fiberglass doors from Therma-Tru. The doors, paneled jamb, transom and round trim all speak to the details found in the original entry. We fabricated the jamb and transom in our shop, this time out of a very decay-resistant wood called Accoya. This material, which has been in widespread use in Europe for decades, has a terrific track record in terms of durability, is non-toxic, and is very sustainable – all traits that we want in the products we produce and install. The new entry system retains the character of this lovely building while promising to provide years of durability and low maintenance for its owners.
